Every homeowner wants their home to look the absolute best it can look. Choosing the right tiles plays a big part in this. Deciding on the right tiles is not just about choosing what would fit in the space. There are many other factors, such as their color, material, and finish. There are endless options to choose from when deciding what tiles to use for your space. Making a choice can be exhausting, but there are certain things to consider that can make the process easier for you.

What you need to know about types of tiles

  • Ceramic tiles are an affordable option and are very durable as well. However, they are prone to cracking and chipping. Group-4 or group-5 ceramic tiles are highly recommended if you want tiles for light and medium-traffic areas.
  • Porcelain tiles are stronger and denser than ceramic tiles and are also scratch and stain-proof. Choosing joint-free or rectified porcelain tiles are recommended for a smooth finish. To achieve a clean look, use epoxy grouting.
  • Vitrified tiles are sturdy, long-lasting, and resistant to stains and moisture. They come in various styles, such as soluble salt tiles with diverse designs, complete body tiles with a consistent palette across the tile, double-charged vitrified tiles with two-tone colors, and glazed tiles with an added gloss.
  • Natural materials such as limestone, sandstone, travertine, and marble are also available as tiles.

Choosing the right size

  • When selecting a size, make sure that there is minimal wastage during installation. Choose bigger tiles for your bedroom, dining room, and living room.
  • Smaller tiles are more suitable for use in the bathroom and kitchen. Keep in mind that larger tiles have fewer joint lines and give the impression of more space in the room.

Picking the optimal tile finish

  • Tiles with gloss finish have a beautiful mirror-like gloss that adds brightness since it reflects a lot of light and makes the home appear larger. However, remember that glossy tiles should not be used in areas such as the bathroom or kitchen since they tend to become slippery when wet.
  • Tikes with matte finishes are slip-resistant, non-reflective, and do not easily show stains or dirt. Slip-resistant tiles also lower the risk of falling in wet areas, such as the bathroom and kitchen.
  • Another option is a lapatto finish or a semi-matte finish. They are also non-slip in nature but are shinier than matte tiles.
